    Wheat Beer Stuck Fermentation

So lots of good advise and info already put out. I would have to agree with @Craigerrr on the point that the yeast will do its thing if left alone and opening up the fermenter for multiple samples does increase the odds bad things happening. Most, if not all, of us have had a beer that just...

    1st Quarter Brew 2023

Well, for an 11 gallon batch of the Bunyip2.0 I needed about 19 gallons, that leaves me with enough water for something else. No need to bring back halve a barrel.

What are you doing with homebrew today?

Filled a 60 gallon drum with mountain spring water to brew with tomorrow. No exciting pictures, just a peaceful drive up to the mountains. Bit of snow after I got off the blacktop roads, but nothing crazy.

How do you calculate ABV when adding another batch of yeast starter in secondary fermentation?

Adding fresh yeast to your secondary should not effect your overall ABV because you have not changed the sugars available for the yeast to consume. Yeast attenuation and alcohol tolerance of the new yeast may play a small role on your final gravity, but it shouldn't make any significant...

Lager started fermenting only after 5 days

Great summary on core causes on the issue of a long lag time for fermentation @HighVoltageMan! , thanks. I have never really had any unexpected long delays on my lagers, but that is probably because I have always over-pitched the amount of yeast. For dry yeast, I normally pitch one pack per...

Tips for purchasing a self-cooled fermenter

I started out fermenting in a plastic bucket and quickly grew out of them. A Glycol systems is really the end all solution for cooling during fermentation (in my opinion), but as everyone else has mentioned, it represents a significant expense. I have a small chest freezer that I converted to...

Lager started fermenting only after 5 days

I agree with everyone, if you have signs of fermentation just give it time. If you have temperature control you will need to bring temperature up for a diacetyl rest when you are a few points away from what your final gravity. I try to bring mine up to around 68F when I am around 5 points from FG.

What are you doing with homebrew today?

Caught up on the forums today, haven't really had time since before Christmas. Ordered the grain for the BF 2023 1st quarter Bunyip brew. Brewed a Salted Caramel Porter today for my wife. She is not a fan of most of my beers, and unfortunately, she probably won't like this one either. Buy...

    Q4 2022 Brewersfriend Quarterly Brew

Really needed another week of conditioning but figured I would at least taste it in this quarter. Taste great, definitely going on my list of beers that needs done each year.

    Problem with a recipe.

As others have stated, every brewing system is different. Pre-bail to post boil is a half gallon difference, which is pretty good, I lose a gallon easily because of the size of my boil kettle. From post boil to fermenter is a loss of 1.5 gallons, which is pretty close to what I would lose if I...
