Last August I brewed a lager. When I racked it and when I saved the trub the odor was not pleasant, but the beer turned out great. Is this unusual? I am brewing again today and the decanted yeast that used to make a starter has the same off smell and I am at the point I need to decide to use or throw out the starter.

It's pretty common for a Lager yeast to put off some not so pleasant odors. So long as your sanitation was good, you should be fine.

Thanks, I'm going ahead with it. The starter seems happy and the batch that it came from was one of my sons favorites. ( He's a Brian too and gave me the a starter brew kit last year)
