There is a new Irish malt (Loughran Family Malt) on the market in Ireland.

There was some discussion by Irish homebrewers about how it would compare to Maris Otter (Scroll down a bit).

So I decided to see.

I brewed this recipies twice on the 10/3 and the 11/3.

Using the Loughran Family Malt on the 10/3 and MO on the 11/3. To see what the diference is.
I know the IBU is high for a SMaSH and I may have masked the flavour of the malt, but it wasn't supposed to be an IPA, but originally planned to be an American pale ale with an IBU of 30 until I had a "not thinking" momnet and added the second hop adition at 40 rather than 20 bringing up the IBU. So I adjusted the recipe and did the same on Day 2.

Pilgrim hops (UK) were used in place of the target in the recipie, but are not (as of yet, hint hint mod) an option in the recipie builder, and target was the closest thing. More information on both brew days is in the Notes section of the recipie.

If the Loughran's is a success then making good beer just got alot cheaper and more sustainable in Ireland!

Good luck! Looks like a really nice price for base malts. That's almost half of what I pay for regular 2 row

Hi

I posted this news on Craft Brewing forum in the UK at the start of the year.

The price looked a steal.

A number of the guys have posted results of using this.

There is a mix of experience. Some have acheived high efficiencies compared to MO but others have had poor results.

The only other comment made was about the quality of the grain milling, this seems to vary.

Another supplier to look at in the UK is the Worcester Hop Shop, this guy seems to have a keen pricing policy.

I tend to use this shop and the MaltMiller.
