Living near the city with the most breweries per capita is hard. Cause I don't have a car to get to Portland LOL! And the cost of a six pack keeps rising with every year. I found it cheaper to just do it myself. Currently I am an extract/partial mash brewer. I don't really have the space to go much further, but even doing this is allowing me to get flavors that just don't exist on the shelves.
I make beers that are really not available on a consistent basis to me. I love deep malt like Wychwood's Hobgoblin and other dark english ales, ESB's, nutty browns, etc. Living in the PNW what I get most of the time is...IPA.
I haven't had a whole lot of luck with really strong dark beer like imperial stouts or adding bourbon. A matter of practice I suppose. Glad to learn from people who have done it before though!
My favorite activity is creating recipes. Whether I intend to actually brew them or not. I love the research
