    Needing some recipe assistance please.

Recipes are more accurately written as so many IBUs of some hop at some minutes, the point in recording this way is that hop IBUs change from year to year and from region to region and sometimes a few miles difference in the harvest can change a hops IBUs. So don't worry about it too much and...

New member, new brewer! Hi from Aurora, CO

John Palmer has compiled all you need to know to brew some great beers. Not saying there aren't other outstanding books, but, if you have Palmers "How to Brew", you will be fine. Welcome to a great hobby!

    Secondary?

I have not done a secondary on a normal beer in well over 10 years. Just not needed and you won't have issues leaving it set on the yeast for several months. It's not the same as a commercial fermentor where you can have the weight of 15 feet of height or more of beer setting on top of the...

    Glucoamylase with Lallymand Philly Sour?

That is 110% the whole idea of this little experiment. I would really like to get my hands on some Lallymand Sourvisiae but that is only available in 500g bricks and I'm not ready to spend $200 on this experiment. lol

    Glucoamylase with Lallymand Philly Sour?

I am planning to try using Glucoamylase with Philly Sour. I plan to put glucoamylase in the mash as well as in the fermenter. What can I expect the pH effect to be? Will this increase the level of lactic acid significantly? Or only lower my final gravity? I have use Glucoamylase quite a few...

    Advanced Crazy Sour questions...

Thanks, I am planning to dose after kegging and just a day before serving. All 3 of those acids are found in beer or wine to some extent. I plan on taking a pint and dosing it and scaling up to the keg. However, I have no idea how much to start adding to the pint. 1 gram each, 2 grams? Or should...

    Advanced Crazy Sour questions...

I will be kettle souring. Measuring pH is not an issue, I have equipment for that, however, measuring TA is not something I have equipment or chemicals to do. The cheap kits are not that accurate so I don't plan to get one for a one off beer. If you don't understand the TA reference, and you...

    Advanced Crazy Sour questions...

So, not interested in being told it's a crazy idea. That's where I live all the time. I am slightly familiar with the relationship between pH, TA and perceived sourness and was hoping to make this work to my advantage but have not found any easy answers to my questions. I hope this isn't too...

new Versions button not working in recipe formulation?

So I see this "new" versions button in my recipe tools, I click on it, it tells me to upgrade my membership. What the heck? I'm already a premium member and my membership is good until July of next year.

    BIAB Recipe Calculator Configuration

I believe I did this, I seen the BIAB profile selection, however after changing it I still don't see the field that changes a total water volume based on how much grain you add and your desired preboil or post boil volume. For BIAB, you should enter your desired preboil volume and it should give...

    BIAB Recipe Calculator Configuration

So I have been brewing for many years, the last 7 mostly on my 3 kettle system, but, I do sometimes brew a batch BIAB and have tried several times to setup a equipment profile for BIAB but have never had any luck. How do I add a equipment profile for BIAB so that it will show me my total water...

First All Grain - couple of questions

I would recommend you get a bigger boil kettle. You really need some room to prevent boil over. If that is not a possibility then I would say you should scale back your batch size. If part of the problem is the cost of the bigger kettle, you might look at doing "Brew in a Bag" (BIAB) in which...

    Thin oatmeal stout

you might also try some minute rolled oats. I have had very good luck using plain old oat meal, the minute variety. Drop the flake oats and substitute minute rolled oats. With the minute stuff, the starch converts much faster.

Fresh Ginger in beer. How much is too much???

Nosybear, did you use fresh, dried or some sort of extract? Did you have other spices in the beer too? I will be using fresh and no other spices. I do want the ginger fairly forward but not so strong that you can't taste the beer. With that in mind, would you still recommend 3 oz or maybe 4...

    SodaStream Home Soda Maker (carbonator)

Technically correct, but, much more commonly called a poor mans beer gun. Regardless of what you choose to call it, it is a cheap quick easy way to fill bottles and purge O2 by allowing it to foam over a bit as you finish your fill. Heck, I think you can buy a real beer gun for less than one of...

    SodaStream Home Soda Maker (carbonator)

If you are kegging anyway, what you really want is a "poor man's beer gun". works just like a Blichmann beer gun, only much cheaper. make it yourself. Here are a few pictures of me using mine to bottle a six pack. http://www.hazardhomebrewing.org/photos ... -beer-gun/ You can also google...

    Gluten free beer fermentation times.

forget about sorghum. Just use this stuff in your regular beer. http://www.whitelabs.com/other-products ... arity-ferm It reduced the gluten to a "gluten free" level. A pro-brewer friend of mine says they have had it tested and it works great and does NOT change the taste of the beer or any...

What the Heck is going on???

What yeast did you use on this? 1.090 is a big beer and really should have a starter or at least double pitch the dry yeast and be sure to rehydrate dry yeast first. and yes yes yes to the pure O2! even on smaller beers the yeast really loves a good shot of O2 at the beginning, makes for much...

Fresh Ginger in beer. How much is too much???

I think I am in relatively uncharted waters here so I thought I would ask if anyone has experience doing this. I plan to add a significant amount of of fresh ginger to a rye ale of some sort. I think the natural spice edge of the rye would be nice with fresh ginger. Have not settled on a hop...
