    BrewZilla FermZilla Journey

Thanks. I didn't have much to work with so I basically guessed. I'll dial down the gypsum next time.

    BrewZilla FermZilla Journey

Ok, so I finally kegged my Torpedo clone where I experimented with water chemistry for the first time, and it's nigh undrinkable. I'm not saying it's because of the additions I made to the water, but I haven't had a beer taste like this before. The beer smells fantastic, very hoppy and bright...

    Starting with starters

I haven't seen anyone mention Brewer's Friend's calculator, but I like bigger beers so I've been using it. I use White Labs liquid yeast so I can look up when it was packaged and plug in the date to give me an estimate of how many cells are available, and how much starter I need to make. That...

    Intro and Advice needed please

As for the mill, seriously reconsider. For $150 it will make a difference. Getting your crush right is important and most Internet places don't I second Minbari's mill suggestion. I couldn't get my efficiency dialed in until I started crushing my own. Good call on the sealed fermenter...

    BrewZilla FermZilla Journey

I received my water profile from Ward's today and I'm excited to plug it in for the brew this weekend. Does anyone see anything that stands out? I'm assuming if I plug in my profile the calculators will tell me what to add to match the profile I'm targeting, correct?

I can't get my brews to taste of hops

"Because that's how I've always done it"? Haha, is that a valid reason? I only have one FermZilla All-Rounder, so I need the space for the next brew. I typically leave the most recent batch in primary for a week, and then transfer into a keg so I can make the next brew. I call that...

    BrewZilla FermZilla Journey

Thanks for those links. I'm waiting for my water profile results from Ward Labs any day. I'm just starting to get into this aspect of brewing, so I bought a pH meter and I'll start adjusting my recipes based on what I find out from Ward.

    BrewZilla FermZilla Journey

I do have temperature control for fermenting. I built a DIY fermentation box using an old dorm fridge, an inkbird controller, and a lightbulb (ha!). I cover the probe with a piece of insulation and tape it to the outside of the Fermzilla.

I can't get my brews to taste of hops

I brew mostly IPAs and recently got a FermZilla. Prior to the FZ, I was doing primary in a plastic bucket and secondary in glass carboys, and used gravity for all the transfers. Now I do primary in the FZ and secondary in a used corny keg, with no exposure to oxygen at any stage. The...

Dry hopping time and what to use to dry hop

I typically dry hop in a secondary fermenter, which has been a keg lately. I use a mesh bag, but not for any good reason. I impulse-bought a Big Mouth Bubbler from Northern Brewer, and it came with a hop spider for dry hopping, but I've never used it because I got a FermZilla around the same...

    BrewZilla FermZilla Journey

Yes! I've done MoreBeer's American IPA three times on the BrewZilla and the recent batch finally hit expected gravity because I re-milled the grain. I'm excited to see if the flavor changes from the previous iteration.

    BrewZilla FermZilla Journey

I've been lurking on Brewers Friend, on and off, for the last nine years, and I've learned a ton. I haven't said much because I didn't think I had much to contribute, but we're all on a journey to brew beer we enjoy, so here goes. I've brewed for years, but I haven't really paid attention to...

    DIY Fermentation Box

Quick update on the fermentation chamber. I brewed Green Flash's West Coast IPA on Saturday and put it in the box around 65 degrees F(didn't switch to Celsius but it wasn't because I forgot...no really). Fermentation started mid-Sunday and I was up to 69 degrees in no time. That temp held...

    DIY Fermentation Box

Cool, I hadn't thought of using a Fermwrap. I'll see if the lightbulb keeps up during the colder seasons and then follow your lead if it's not enough. Same here, but I'll be changing it to C and doing the conversion.

    DIY Fermentation Box

After years of being at the mercy of Mother Nature, I finally built a fermentation box. I might be the least handy person I know, so I was mildly surprised when I plugged a 60W lightbulb into the Ink Bird temperature control and was able to increase the temp in the box by 18 degrees. My...
