Cheap Closed Fermentation for home brews

No worries. So far I’ve had good success and no oxygenated beer. Not completely full proof but I think it works well. Certainly for a budget :)

Cheap Closed Fermentation for home brews

So I have been experimenting a lot lately with fermenting my brews in a closed system but still allowing to transfer to a second bottling bucket. I seem to have come up with a great system, that’s also cheap. Most people will already have most of the components needed anyway. The only part...

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

So Bottling day was a success. Wort drained from fermenter to Bottling Bucket with ease, no splashing and mixed with the priming solution. Used a bottling wand to bottle. Very easy with minimum o2 contact. There you have it, a cheap and easy way to minimise o2 contact in a...

Ha wow, more than enough then. :)

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

yes, there is a pipe on the inside which goes all the way down to the priming solution. It has a small slit (above solution level) to allow CO2 up to purge it.

Thanks. Yep boiled the sugar solution first. So you reckon not to bother with a CO2 burst? I suppose it depends on how quickly the fermentation takes to start, I just wanted to play safe. :)

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

Closed System Experiment Ok so brewed my beer over weekend and tested my new setup. All seems to have gone well. The fermentation is feeding CO2 to the Bottling Bucket which has the priming solution in. I primed the bottling bucket first with a quick burst from a CO2 bulb using the pin valve...

Indeed this is true and that’s the reason I added the inline filter here to catch any overactive fermentation (Krausen). It also unscrews for emptying.

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

Yep it shouldn’t do that. Only the liquid line goes deep into the bottling bucket.

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

Ok I have setup my closed system ready for testing. I added an inline filter(without the filter in) to catch any overactive fermentation. Inside the bottling bucket the liquid line continues to the bottom (has a small slit at bottom end to allow CO2 up for purging). I shall be testing...

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

Thanks and I will do. I have successfully bottled an NEIPA via bottling bucket but I also have had one that’s been Oxygenated. My next beer is gonna be a Dunkles Weissbeir. Not necessary for the closed system but will test it anyway. :)

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

Hi, yeah my idea was to maybe give the bottling bucket a quick blast from a CO2 bulb to quickly purge it at the beginning, then add the priming solution and seal it up. :) If no access to a CO2 bulb then yes a quick starting yeast would certainly help.

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

That’s exactly the thinking I’m looking for. :) It maybe only go this extra mile for NEIPA and other styles that are more prone to oxygenation.

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

Im not worried, I just wanted to see if we could come up with a good system. I’ve been brewing and bottling fine for about 4 years now. The only problems I can say I have come across is with NEIPA’s. It’s more that I’m the sort of person that likes to try and improve things if I can. The...

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

Is there any reason why the following would not work. I’m thinking of a basic setup, no expensive equipment. Something that anyone can do (beginners or pro). 1 Brew Day - Brew beer as normal - Sanitise both Fermenter and Brew bucket (Same size) and all tubing. - Make a Priming Solution and...

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

    how would I do that?

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

Ah, I’ve have the little CO2 gas bulbs. So how exactly I do that then. Add Priming Solution, then purge (or other way round). Does the CO2 stay in when I open lid to insert tube from the fermenter (I’m guessing yes if CO2 is heavier than air). Thanks

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

Good points. I’m only draining fermenter with gravity, I do not have any means to purge or push out with CO2 (or at least I don’t know of any methods, I simply have a fermenter with tap and some tubing). Is syphoning out better? I brew all different sorts of beer but want to come up with a good...

    Bottling from Primary Fermenter

sounds interesting, I only do half batch sizes as well (11 litres) so could work for me.

how would I go about purging it? thanks
