5 gallon BIAB solutions for a 7 gallon kettle

well, 2.5 gallons for my setup is going big :) using Brewfather, there is a setting for "top-up" and it looks like that's exactly what i need here. i changed my recipe to target 2.5g, instead of 2g, and it automatically scaled ingredients to that volume. then i adjusted "top-up" accordingly...

5 gallon BIAB solutions for a 7 gallon kettle

Hello SabreSteve, I've got a similar situation and wanted to know how that technique worked out for you. I have a 14l kettle and making 8l batches with BIAB. Fed up with the auto siphon, I just got an SS Brewtech mini (3.5g) and would like to fill it up more than 2g of course. Do I need a...

Yeah, that's not gonna happen. There is no LHBS nearby, so its only mail order. They charge for milling and that's just the way it is. I will be getting my own mill so I dont have to deal with any of that.

2nd BrewDay - Dialing in and a few questions

Actually i've got induction. it can even span across two eyes on the stovetop, so i can bump up the vigor of the boil a bit.

2nd BrewDay - Dialing in and a few questions

The BeerCraftr recipe calls for 9 litres water. Is it possible that, given my equipment and boil off rate, I would need to start with less? This time, I had an extra .8 litres. So, all other things being equal, should I have started with .8 litres less? Are you saying that the recipe editor...

2nd BrewDay - Dialing in and a few questions

By the way, coming back to the mash temps, I think that I fell below the target of 156F because I didnt do a full volume BIAB mash (I mashed in 7 litres and sparged in 2litres, though the recipe called for mash in 9 litres)...so next time, should i bump up the initial strike water temp, say 5...

2nd BrewDay - Dialing in and a few questions

    1. If I boil longer, that will change the IBU's, right? In that case, its a good idea to adjust pre-boil volume and not affect IBU/taste as much. or, i suppose i could try a more vigorous boil. 2. i left 20% headspace to avoid painting the ceiling. i constructed a blowoff anyway. 3. yeah...

2nd BrewDay - Dialing in and a few questions

Hi, the mash temps started a bit up and down...I had placed the kettle in an oven heated to 170F 5 mins, then turned off strike water initially at 163F 8h35 mashin at 152F ... so i turned the heat back on until it hit 156F 8h50 157F 9h10 155F 9h35 got tired of measuring i think ... 2nd BrewDay - Dialing in and a few questions

On today's menu was an American Pale Ale (American Pale Ale II Recipe - BeerCraftr's 1-Gallon Beer Recipes) Struggled with low OG on the first brew, so made these adjustments: milled grain a second time at home with cheese grater (better than nothing); it took a while so I didnt do a 3rd time...

I'm pretty sure if I grind that fine, my brew bag would be close to useless because of the big holes on the bottom: https://www.brouwland.com/en/our-products/brewing/brewing-equipment/lauter-kettles-filter-bottoms/d/mashing-bag-30x30x35cm do you get extra trub milling that way?

Twice milled grains - see picture

No, I will only be on my 2nd brew this Friday :) So, you think a blender that cuts the grain may bring out astringency whereas a mill that crushes would not? Maybe i'll add a bit of moisture before running it through my grater ...

    Save time on mash step

Hello, Just thinking about how to save time during the mash. Some folks do an overnight mash in a mash tun. I have a steel kettle and i'm sure i'd lose too much heat. If the temperature falls below 130F, there problems with bacteria which can be killed off during the boil, but may leave a...

I told my LHBS that i needed milling for BIAB. They said they don't play around with the settings, so you get what you get. Guess customer service aint their thing.

Twice milled grains - see picture

I just had my first brew a few weeks ago. I guess the coarsely milled grain by my LHBS largely explains why my post mash OG was around 1.030 for a beer that was supposed to be 1.070 ?

Wow! Well, i've got three inserts and used the middle one to grind what you see in the picture. The coarse insert did almost nothing, and the fine insert instantly turned the grains to powder. So, i'll mill a third time with the medium. I read that you could end up with a bunch of muck if...

Well, it took me about 15 seconds to grind the few ounces in the plate, so i'm willing to put in the 2 minutes of grinding if it helps my efficiency!

So, trying to improve efficiency by grinding grains finer. My LHBS milled the grain for me, but it clearly wasn't adequate for BIAB. The pre-milled grains are in the plastic bag. I ran them through a cheese grater (also used for nuts and grains) and you can see the sample in the plate...
