Cold IPA - recipe and BJCP listing

Never knew this was a style until the breweries here started doing them. Been making it for years! As previously stated, it's basically an IPA with a lager yeast. I did them here in the winter for that reason, too cold for ale yeasts. Stay away from the sulphery lager yeasts and they can be...

    CO2 Shortage!!!

The powers that be use shortages all the time. Australia had their CO2 shortage last Christmas. It won't last, it's just the latest 'Thing'. Be patient!

My thing on 30 min mashing is that recently, I'd rather overshoot my target efficiency and then later dilute for more yield Plus, as I've already said, I'm old school and hard habits die hard! Hit 83 brewhouse the other day on a g30!

    Laundering practices

Yeah, I'm with you What I always tell people is that if you try Batch Brewing Co. down here in Sydney, I KNOW they don't mash out, and you can see by their day to day efficiency and flavour. They once did two batches, one whirlpool hop only and one dry hopped only and one was 4.7% and the...

    Laundering practices

I wouldn't worry about sparge water that much, commercially I definitely dialed it in, but home brewing I just use hot water out of the tap. From what I've been taught, as long as it's hot it should be fine.

Yeah, that's kinda true. Mashout only happens between 76-80 imo, and has to be for a few mins. I do 10.

WOW! SO many of you guys don't mash out! I recirc, mash out, etc etc. Although that I agree that you don't HAVE to mash out, for consistency purposes I would definitely do it. The flavour profile you're looking for is locked in much better by mashing out. I know, I know, grains are so good...

    Favourite Hops

Not sure why I feel the need to post this, but maybe I just want to publicly confirm something that I've always shied away from, and that's NZ hops. So I've been making a pale ale for the shop the last couple months using the same grain bills and changing out the hops, with the intention to...

    Over Fermentation?

Yeah, we're using cheapies in the shop as well. I can't justify using a 300 dollar hydrometer for homebrew lol. That being said, been using Nottingham and Windsor all winter and they've all finished right on target, so I don't think the hydro is the problem I haven't noticed much taste...

    Over Fermentation?

We had this happen most of the fall here in Australia. Not sure why, but the US-05 we had was consistently finishing ferment at 1.008 instead of 1.010. I think there can be yeast variations just like anything in brewing. Temp definitely plays a role as well, but lets remember, yeast is just...

Has anyone used a Grainfather S40?

Yeah, I think you'll be sweet

Has anyone used a Grainfather S40?

Yeah, so David Heath is showing that it's slower than the G40 by about double. Takes 15 mins roughly to reach mash temp, but it's basically the same timing as the G30. Overall, I think for the price you paid, it's a steal

Has anyone used a Grainfather S40?

So I sell Grainfathers. The G40 is basically the G70. I will say, the heating element could be a bit better, and overall brew time is longer than the G30, but you're getting more volume. Also, anything the G40 lacks, it's made up for with how good the pump is. The pump on the G40 and G70...

    Are kegerators worth the $500?

yeah, bottom line, it's about preference. Picnic taps work fine as long as you clean them and your lines. I have picnic taps that are well over 2 years old. With the tapping shanks you have an easier mess to clean up and save your back a bit. I promise, any day now, I'll get around to...

I can't get my brews to taste of hops

I think that with the more mild malts (pils/pale/wheat/etc) you definitely get more hop aroma, but it's nothing to stress about. @Sunfire96 is right, Maris Otter is a great malt for a NEIPA. In fact, here in OZ, Gladfield's regular Pale (New Zealand) is basically the same as Maris colour and...

    No Chill Brewing

Yeah, I know you can have crystal clear wort, because like I said, Fresh Wort Kits are No Chill beers and they're crystal clear The thing is how quickly you can get proteins to bond and drop out. The faster you do this, the quicker and longer the bonds can become. The longer those bonds, the...

    No Chill Brewing

There really isn't a study specifically on that. But you can look up studies on how hop oils bind to back it up
