    Water testing kit rec. ?

My water provider's published report doesn't include many of the measurements in the water calculator. Does anyone have a good recommendation for an at-home test kit that can determine those numbers? Thanks

    Beers aren't finishing (high FG)

Sorry not sorry to hijacking this thread. I've brewed for several years, and have never had this happen until the current batch of Scottish Ale. OG: 1044, been stuck at 1020 for two weeks. Even pitched new yeast just in case. No change. Thoughts?

    PBW + StarSan

Upon some internet research, it appears that one method for synthesizing Sodium Sesquicarbonate is to add Sodium Carbonate to Phosphoric Acid. Looks like they don't neutralize each other, but rather leave behind a rather nasty chemical. There goes two batches of beer (and this year's Festbier :( )

    PBW + StarSan

Well, I suppose I should clarify that this was PBW substitute made from unscented oxyclean and phosphate-free TSP. Sodium Carbonate Peroxide and Sodium Carbonate from the OxyClean and Sodium Sesquicarbonate from the TSP, and Phosphoric Acid from the StarSan.

    PBW + StarSan

Can StarSan neutralize PBW residue? If there's a touch of PBW left behind left in a vessel, and you fill the vessel with StarSan without rinsing it first, will that be sufficient? I'm trying to decide how panicked I should be because I don't remember if I rinsed between the wash and sanitize...

    Smack Pack

I've had most of my Wyeast packs swell up like balloons. I one not swell and work just fine. I had another not swell and did *nothing*. I was making a starter anyway, so that didn't screw me up too bad, but 72 hours in a starter and ZERO fermentation. The LHBS replaced it for free and took...

    Cider Yeast Choices

Let the flames begin. ;) Read a recommendation last night somewhere to use Sweet Mead yeast for Apple Cider as it leaves a bit of sugar and the apple character in tact more than some other yeasts. Last year I used Nottingham, and was initially left with something very much like a delicious...

    Clone Beers

Accidentally, or on purpose? I once brewed an IPA that I couldn't tell from Redhook Longhammer. Wasn't trying to, though. I'm giving a go at getting close to Moose Drool, but as long as I'm close enough for my taste, I'll be satisfied.

New Brewer dove in head first and landed on my head. Help!

Re: New Brewer dove in head first and landed on my head. He Non-chambered fermentation can vary a lot depending on a few things: Is the bucket sitting on carpet in a closet? On Tile in a laundry room? In a bathtub? The former is an insulating surface, the latter two conductive. A bucket...

So when it's stuck, whaddya do?

Every once in a while, I don't know it it's an adjunct I've added or just dumb luck, but occasionally, I get a stuck sparge. Since I often don't mash out, this can mean unintended continued conversion (I effectively ruined a beer this way). The first time this happened, I turned off the valve...

    Cornelius keg question

Phosphate-Free TSP and Oxyclean should be able to get it clean. I have no idea on the post conversions, though.

    questions on a saison recipe...

How large of a batch? An ounce can be a lot for those types of additions. 10 minutes is OK. 5 is better. Use a bag.

    Just Bragging

Thanks everyone for the congratulations. My friends and family are always more than happy to drink my beer, and incidentally usually prefer beers different than the judges. I tend to brew more for friends and family than anyone else, anyway - with most of my brewing choices and beer names...

    Temp Controlled Fermintation Chamber

I built nearly the exact same thing: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1026&p=13584#p13584 Here's the problem I ran into. I live in a humid climate, and the coil in the freezer compartment of the unit would ice over, then melt, and soak everything. When I finally dismantled it (because I just bought an...

    Just Bragging

Won Best in Show for my table strength Saison, "Sarah" at the Carolina Quarterly Brew Off last weekend. First major award as a homebrewer, and it made my day. Got some really good feedback on the rest of my beers as well, which was the entire point in entering. Felt I needed to share that...

    growing a hop canopy

Not to be "that guy," but hops aren't a vine. They're a bine. Vines climb using tendrils, hops climb by wrapping the entire stem around their support. My wife's a plant geek, so by association, so am I. ;)
