    Negative pressure in cold crash

Thanks guys I had to transition from airlocks to handle over-foaming. I have an airlock on it now with foil over that. Next time I will be ready for this situation! I had thought it would be better to avoid disturbing the setup until I was ready to rack it. Now I know better. Would've been...

    Negative pressure in cold crash

Hi, Last night I mini-kegged 5 gallons from cold crash and I am sending another 5 into cold crash today. The issue I'm having is that the temperature reduction from my ale ferment to cold crash temps, is resulting in liquid being sucked back up my blowoff hose. It gets about 1/2 way it seems...

I am mulling over ways to bat down the krausen somehow so I can brew big in the 6 gallon carboy without needing a blow off (never gonna happen :) )

    starter bad?

Yeah I'll have to step them again. Maybe do 2 batches concurrently though I'm pretty miffed at my plastic pail right now, don't trust it. Might take the bleach to it. I guess those things just stop being cleanable after awhile.

It is good, yes I think that he has added a lot to the table with this work. Great photos and resourcefulness as well. I think that the implication to his work, is that others could perform his experiments, or similar, to help to validate and interpret his results. Though they are good on...

    starter bad?

In transporting it around I've disturbed the bottom now, you can see the stirrer in there. Natural light might be better, anyhow this is the other.

    starter bad?

I am trying to get a better shot, can you interpret this Larry, hazard a guess, questions? & thanks! EDIT there is a cat hair that got sucked on to the outside of the flask. I didn't see it taking the picture. But it wasn't inside.

    starter bad?

So I've been building up 2 starters from the yeast cake of my last, successful batch. The past week I have had to work, the starters have been in the fridge. I smelled them and they smell like great beer. Nothing looks wrong with them, in the bottom stratified layer there's some green from...

    Lessons Learned

Sounds like a really good beer you've got there. I went with 2 lbs of turbinado, inverted first, in the last batch. Worked out fantastic, good color offset to ultralight malt. Lately in my area, organic turbinado has come down in price.

Thanks for all of your perspectives. I am running these starters through another 500ml of 1g/10ml wort now, probably pitch them tomorrow if it seems there is enough. Fun to think about the composition of this next beer! :) A quick update, as it happens the initial FG of the air head space...

Isn't it normal to see a 'yeast cake' accumulate in the starter? I don't see a way of avoiding it. Perhaps I should be running the stirrer 24/7, or getting the temperature way down. Even with the stirrer, I get yeast activity from yeast cake fairly immediately, and it shows up as krausen &...

Fun to hear your impressions of the flavor characteristics of your works in progress. So the main difference is simply in the yeast? I'll check your posting on it. I am on to consuming the second mini keg of my first brew in a long time. Pleased with the result, it is a clear and crisp taste...

It would be interesting to see pictures of experiments in process, or pictures of current beers that we might have in progress. Here's one from today; I had been wondering whether there would be a visible difference in the appearance of two similar starters, comparing one with o2 introduced...

    Permanent Haze In My Beer

Found this, perhaps you've seen it. About the address, looks like you have to copy/paste what's between the 's into your browser url field, to point to the .pdf. Hope you find a way to clear it though if it tastes good, I would call it a win :)...

    Stored liquid Yeast Lifetime

Wonder if there's a certain refrigerator temp that's best for storing liquid yeast. Just checked mine with ir thermometer, adjusted it to be warmer as some areas in there were <32F. ...I found that 33 - 38F is the range for yeast slurry in this old link...

    adding enzymes to wort Q

Well, I'm betting with you if it comes down to betting, if that's ok :D I rather plan to dry hop... About the Beano, just to clarify I didn't put it in the fermentation at all, I put it into 1/3 of the pre-boil at body temp for 45 minutes. Then I proceeded to boil the life out of it, then...

    adding enzymes to wort Q

Hey Brian. I'm going for the <. 50 cent, lower carb/calorie beer target. I'm trying to cheap out on buying reputable malt extracts, by inverting natural cane instead. Only 2 pounds, like 25% of the 6 gallon batch. The enzymes in Beano are Alpha galactosidase and invertase, possibly others...
