    Hop garden

Planning on doing a hop garden. Got a starter pack from arrowheadhops.com and comes with 6 varieties. Not sure I have room on my eaves for that many plants. So, how would they do on a 6' x 100' chain link fence?

    Rapid gravity change

On my latest brew, the OG was 1.060 three days later it is 1.016? Is that even possible to ferment that fast or did I mess up on my reading? This is the first time taking a reading this early in the process. I did a 2l yeast starter on my stir plate for the first time ever. Could this be the...

Brew Steps addition for efficiency calculations

Love the brew steps and used them for my first PM, so helpful!!! But when it came time to log in the brew log to calculate my efficiency I found out there was some things I needed to measure/record but the steps never mentioned it, and myself being new didn't really know about them until after...

    A day of firsts!

So Sunday I set out to do an IPA/APA for a local club comp. So this would be a long day of "Firsts" for my brewing career. This would be my FIRST recipe I built from scratch http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/75041/ipa-comp. My FIRST time using my stir plate to make my...

    What I did last night

Taking the brewing to the next level and going to start doing starters. I am of the mindset if there is inexpensive way to accomplish something, thats the way i am going to try. :D Wood box from Hobby Lobby $4.99 ( watch for 50% of sales then it is only $2.50) Stir Sticks $4.50 each LHBS...

    Thermometers and elevations

So as I think about temps more and more, I am trying to figure out exactly what temps I should be mashing at based on my elevation. So I live at 4200' roughly which means water boils at 204 degrees. Based on candy making experience I know that for every 1000' of elevation I should subtract 2...

    Mash tun build

I had a spare igloo ware cooler whose valve had gone bad. I took the valve out and found the hole would fit the below links valve perfectly. My question is the flow out since it is not a ball valve, is that a rely big deal, or more of a patience thing? If this valve were to work, that makes a...

Would it be possible to have comments tied into the forum? I have left only one comment and noticed it is not very utilized. If it tied into the forum and the username there, that would be awesome. My thoughts for simple integration. Share recipe At bottom for comments is a button to create a...

    Polar night

Thoughts and opinions on this recipe. Used Snow Day (New Belgium) as a inspiration to this. Want a Dark, Hoppy Bear with a Strong Hop Aroma, but not overly hard to drink. http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/r ... olar-night Also would look for recommendations on how to make a Partial-Mash...

    Lucky day

Saw an online ad for some 22 oz amber bottles. I figured I would swing by and grab them since the bigger ones are nice as you have less to fill. I roll up and the guy tells me 40 bottles, $30. I figured okay, not a killer deal, but decent. I open the box and find...... 32oz Grolsch...

    Cooling wort

So I was watching a Mythbusters the other night, and they were tasked with finding the quickest way to cool a 6 pack of beer. They did a regular cooler full of ice, a cooler full of ice water and salt, and then a fire extinguisher. After their testing it was determined that a fire extinguisher...

    Efficiency with extract

So after putting a few batches in here, and a couple brew sessions later, I have not hit my recipe OG on any of them. After reading and reading I found that it is because my efficiency had defaulted to 70%. In looking at equipment settings the efficiency is under the all grain section, and will...

    Water tests

So for the batches I have done so far, I have just used my tap water (boiled and cooled). I do not have a water softener connected, so I know my water is hard, but it is good tasting and does not have a chlorine smell at all. As I read more and more I find that water obviously can have a huge...
