First mild - what do you think?

    I'm brewing my first mild tomorrow. Can't really change much now - I already crushed the grain - but here's the recipe: Por-Mo Mild Maris Otter - 4# Munich malt - 2# Brown malt - 12 oz C-120 - 4 oz Amber malt - 4oz Cara Belge - 4 oz (it's 22L c-malt) Carafa 2 - 3 0z (just to bump the color up...

    First beer(s) of 13?

I finally got off my lazy ace and brewed my first for the year. It's an APA (5 Gall) with 6# 2-row, 4#Munich, 8 oz Caramunich, Amarillo hopped. Going to crush grain for a mild in a few minutes, probably brew it tomorrow night. I'm calling it Por-Mo mild - it's going to be hopped with Pride of...

    Stone Drink by IPA

Has anyone tried this? Very smooth for a near 10% ABV DIPA. Hopped to high heaven, very pale - if it's got any caramel malt, it doesn't have much. I grabbed the last 2 from my local beer store. It's called 12/21/12: the idea is that if you drink it before the Mayan end of the world deal, you get...

What are your essential 2012 hops?

I have mine ordered, so I guess I can say without fear of starting a run. I had to have Citra and Amarillo. I've also got Centennial and Simcoe on the way. The first two were must haves, otherwise there are several more or less interchangeable citrusy hops I can rotate in; chinook, cascade, etc...

Southern Hemisphere Hops at Label Peelers

Pretty much speaks for itself. They had Nelson Sauvin, Pacific Jade, Green Arrow, Motueka and Pride of Ringwood by the pound in pellet form, Galaxy by the ounce. If you are on their e-mail list, check it now - I had a 20% discount waiting for me. They are expensive, but you might not get a...

Has anyone used Wyeast Northwest Ale?

I made a batch with this - 1/2 pale, 1/2 Vienna malt, hopped with Galaxy and Cascade - recently. The beer is good, but it has a mild estery taste. It is more prominent once the beer warms up. It's not bad, and I know it's a desirable taste for an English style pale, but I'm a little surprised. I...

    Next batch?

Anybody have a brew coming up? My brewing partner is leaving town (more on that in another post), so if we get a chance to do another batch it will be an odds and ends beer, along these lines *pale malt - we have a couple of single # bags of MO, and a couple of bag-corners of MO and domestic...

    (Resolved) Actual versus Projected gravity

Some calculators have projected OG, FG and ABV, and actual which you enter manually after you brew. I guess if you adjust the efficiency you can usually get the right numbers, so maybe it doesn't matter. Just a thought.

Using multiple yeasts in one batch

I brewed a beer sort of on the spur of the moment recently. It's hopped so insanely I'm almost embarrassed to make it shareable and post the link, but here it is: http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/r ... golden-ale If I screwed that up, can someone let me know? Simply put, it's a 10 gallon...

(Resolved) CAPTCHA bites - what's the point?

I like the blog area, and I was interested in the Black Ale idea - I basically agree, with a couple of quibbles - but I couldn't get my comment in because of the CAPTCHA deal at the bottom. I can read the thing just fine, but it just won't accept my definitely correct answer and erases my...

    What was your last batch?

We brewed what could be a unique beer the other day: a "Dunkel Weiss Wien" (?). It's a barleywine (a bit on the light side with OG ~ 1.086) made with German dark wheat and Munich malt. The long boil hop is Apollo ( an awesome super alpha/ dual purpose hop), with 10 OZ of Fuggle and 10 OZ of EKG...

    Experimental: Throwback Burton Ale

This is a crazy idea I'm working on. The idea is a 'preindustrial' Burton Ale, in other words similar to what might have been brewed before coke fired kilns made pale malt possible. This recipe is a work in progress. It's for a 5 gallon batch with a bit to spare for what's left in the lb + of...

First time poster, medium time brewer

Hey fellow brewers. Just joined the site - dumb question already. I'm trying to enter a recipe and it keeps stopping me and telling me, "efficiency must be a positive number". It IS a positive number (70%), so does anyone know what it's talking about? Thanks.
