Thanks for this guys, great advice all round. Think i'm going to Ditch the wheat Swap out the yeast for Wyeast Whitbread 1099 Dial up the CaraBohemian from 150g to 200g Add in some CaraMunich (200g) Here's the latest recipe. Slightly lighter, but i'm not worried about that...

    Oatmeal Stout

I love this forum. Two responses, one telling me simplify my grain bill, another one telling me to add to it! Good inspiration though. I think I'm going to keep it as it is for the sake of averaging out the two responses :D

    Oatmeal Stout

What would you consider dropping? I've adapted this recipe from a home-brew recipe book I have. There were a few things I couldn't get my hands on, so I has to make some substitutions. For reference, here's the original...

    Oatmeal Stout

Looking for some feedback on this Oatmeal Stout! It's the first time i've ever made one, so any advice appreciated! https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/715039/zero-three-oatmeal-stout

    First Cherry Beer

Meh, a few other people raised the same point and I had a decent chat with someone who suggested that keeping the grain bill simple would be best (I'm all for keeping things simple) so i've knocked it back for this batch. Also, seeing as this is the first time i'll be using most of these...

    First Cherry Beer

Okay, consensus across a few different sources is to ditch the rice and simplify the grain bill. I've also halved the batch size as it'll lead to an easier day for me. https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/709252/rachel-s-cherry-beer

Ummmm, because the original recipe I copied it from had it in... I have no idea.

    First Cherry Beer

My other (better) half has asked me to brew a cherry beer for her for bonfire night. Means I’m going to have to brew tomorrow night, which means I have to order everything in the next 3 hours. What do you folks think of this...

    Halving a Recipe

Yeah, I plugged it through the recipe builder, but i'm still getting to grips with it and I haven't got my equipment profile configured properly yet. Thanks for all the advice though.

    Halving a Recipe

I'm looking to halve a recipe from a book that i've got. Essentially I don't have the capacity to do a full batch and just want to squeeze a half-batch in. I'm just trying to figure out how to correctly halve everything? I'm assuming that grist and hops will all get halved, but the water...

    The First Recipe

Thanks for all this. Brew day is next Saturday (my fermentation fridge is occupied this weekend) so I’ll report back once it’s all brewed up!

That should be updated now - I've also swapped out the Crystal 15L for some Vienna, as that's what I can get my hands on. I plan on paying for membership soon. I'm waiting until I "need" to - which will probably be after pay day :)

Okay, swapped out for Fuggle. Changed the first addition to 40g, snuck in a 20g 30min addition and then slipped the 15min addition back to a 10min addition. Brings the IBU up to 51 which should be about lovely. https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/701031/zero-one-pale-ale

    The First Recipe

I was going off this from James Morton's BREW book Alpha acid isomerisation occurs at 79°c (174°F) and over, the higher the temperature, the faster the reaction happens. Adding hops to slowly cooling wort adds bitterness in an uncontrolled fashion; you do not know how much unless you've...

I whirlpool at 75C as I’ve heard that’s a good place for utilisation.

Sound advice. I think dropping that FWH by a few grams will help. On a side note, I picked Citra as a "well, i've got to start somewhere" hop. But, if you were to swap the Citra out of this but still keep it as a good "base recipe" - which hop would you go for? Thanks for all the tips!

Thanks! With regards to the IBU - BF is adding on 20 extra IBUs for the Whirlpool and Dry Hop additions. So I’ve got a feeling it won’t turn out as bitter as implied. But I’ll guess I’ll find out!

    The First Recipe

Hey Folks, So, i've been brewing all-grain BIAB for about a year now. I've got a few successful batches under my belt so thought I'd start to try and build my own simple recipe. I'm keen to get a base level recipe down that I can build on and tweak so I can understand the impact each change is...
