What are you doing with homebrew today?

May as well just start a new thread since the old one appears to be a victim of an alien abduction.

    Email notifications

Was wondering if anyone else is having this problem. For the last few days I haven't been receiving notifications for unread watched threads. Thought maybe there had been a change to this feature.

Sad news for the homebrewing world

For those who haven't heard the bad news, Mike "Tasty" McDole has been moved into hospice care after a long battle with cancer. As you savor your next pint of Janet's Brown Ale, please say a prayer for him and his family.

    Repurposing Brewing Equipment

I've accumulated several fermenters over the years that I no longer feel comfortable fermenting in. I hate to see anything go to waste when it can be repurposed. so I cut the bottoms out of the fermenters and use them as hot caps in the garden. It's nice to get an early start without worrying...

    Thermowell adapter for Speidel fermenter

After looking at the thermowell options for the Speidel 30L fermenter I couldn't see spending $30 to $40 on either of them. Bought a spare cap and a #6.5,two hole ribbed silicone stopper and made one up for $10 and about 15 minutes work. Needed to drill a hole between 1 1/16" and 1 1/4" in the...

    PSA Shipping surcharge changes

Just before the end of 2019, UPS and FedEx dropped the weight limit that triggers the oversize package surcharges. The weight was dropped from 70 pounds to 50 pounds. I'd expect some changes in both free shipping and flat rate shipping restrictions and qualifying limits from many suppliers...

    Brew Years Resolutions

Someone's gotta start it! I'll lead off. My first is to use up the few pounds of 2016 crop hops. None have shown any signs of degradation, but I'm sure they will eventually. Last year I dialed in my house APA and IPA, so for this year I resolve to do the same with a house ESB and a Blonde.

Growing Brew Scene in Chico, Ca.

Our daughter flew in from St. Louis this past Thursday. We headed out for Chico Friday morning to visit the Sierra Nevada Brewery. Had a great dinner and some nice beers there Friday evening. Decided to do some exploring Saturday and found that there were some new breweries and Cideries in town...

    Interesting Aussie product!

I'd almost forgotten about this. A couple of years ago, my wife was looking for an interesting stocking stuffer for our daughter, who loves hot food, and found this sauce. I'd never seen the packaging until today when her order for more of it came in. This is some serious hot sauce, but the...

    Now I see the light

Some of you may have seen in my posts and responses that I find beers hopped with only Centennial are too sweet for my palate. I just started drinking an ale that I bittered with Centennial and used Cascade and Mosaic for flavor and aroma. This is a 1.049 OG beer with ~42 IBUs, 12 of which came...

St. Louis beers not to buy

Our youngest daughter met us in Bend, OR for our Beercation last week. She brought 3 IPAs from St. Louis with her. Now, she is a craft beer lover, but hasn't had time to do much sampling since she moved to St.Louis, so just picked them up at the super market. Right now I'm drinking the only one...

    Happy Independance Day!

Thanks to those who fought for our independence throughout our great history. And a happy 4th to everyone. I just know everyone has their smoker or grill rolled out and is prepping a great meal to celebrate. I've trimmed a couple slabs of St. Louis style ribs, salted them and have them resting...

    Drinking in Ireland

Been having Wi-Fi trouble, but finally was able to log on. Spent yesterday in the city and did the Guinness tour. Tried a couple of their craft beers as well as an obligatory pint of stout. Not sure if the IPA and Rye Pale Ale will be distributed in U.S. or the frozen North, but would recommend...

    Just had to brag

So I took a ride out to a pond about a mile from home. Had my ultra light rod with a Joe's fly on 4 lb. test line. Flipped it out maybe 10 times when I thought I snagged. All of a sudden the drag started singing and the fight was on. The fish took off across the pond. then off to the left 30 or...
