    BIG DECISION

Thanks guys for all your input! Epilogue: We killed the 3 gallon keg on Sunday. Dave likes beer for breakfast. Transferred the small batch in there on Monday , cold crashed, force carbonated yesterday and drinking tonight. I’m not one to usually pat myself on the back but this is a mighty...

    BIG DECISION

We have a small batch ready to keg; it's too much to fit in our 1.75 Mini Keg (about 2.5 gallons) Multiple choice question: #1 - put what we can in mini keg, leaving head space, and bottle the rest (least appealing at the moment but probably best choice). #2 - put half in the mini keg leave...

    Yikes unexpected OG.

    Okay. thanks JA !!

    Yikes unexpected OG.

I would estimate about 1.6 Gallons. I'm using a two gallon fermenter with no volume marks, but it was about 1.3 in the kettle at flame out and I added 34 oz to the fermenter.

    Yikes unexpected OG.

See recipe ink below. I brewed this recipe today as an experimental batch to put in our mini keg. Its similar (hopefully better) to a recipe we have brewed before, and If it's good I'm going to rework it to 5 gallons. I've done a couple of small 1 and 2 gallon extract batches before and I never...

    Yeast Cell Count

That’s interesting. Don’t make a lot of big beers, 6% is pushing outside of our envelope. In the past we have only used liquid yeast when we’re making 5 gallons. I know some of you are going to say we’re crazy but we have zeroed in on about 3 gallon net extract brews with grains and it works...

    Yeast Cell Count

Hi Guys - I poked around on the forums here and also homebrewtalk.com to see if I could find info on this, maybe I'm searching under the wrong search words? Here's the dealio.... we're going to make a Coffee Porter tomorrow. We've have an old-ish Wyeast smack pack of London Ale (Nov. 27th manf...

New to kegging - some general questions

Hi All- started kegging recently and learning the basics! Have a mini 1.75 and just ordered a new 3 gallon. Working our way up! Can we dry hop something in the keg that’s already been carbonated? Beer Not tasting as good as it did prior to carbonating. Needs tweeking. Can we take the remaining...

    Irish Stout

Hi all & Vthokiedsp too - always very careful about the steeping temp! didn't make that mistake! AND, I'm not bashing kits, but we are done with that -six weeks later and what a six weeks its been! Created a recipes here and brewed a really good APA, just bottled a Wit (Allagash clone) which...

    Irish Stout

Hi Bob. A couple guys mentioned the steeping, if anything we had it on the low side 150-160 degrees for about 25 min. It was the first time we steeped without the flame on (on some advise), and it stayed pretty much on temp target. Never got near 170. One thing of note... pulled the grain bag up...

    Session IPA Final gravity

OK I know this is going to sound really dumb but, have to ask because we are rookies... We brewed a 5 gallon batch extract session IPA the expected OG was 1.047 according to the recipe... it was actually 1.044 don’t ask me why or what we did wrong because we were pretty strict following it, but...

    Irish Stout

Head first that is a good point! and interestingly enough they didn’t ask what volume we used. We did a little over 2 1/2 gallons in the brew pot to allow for some boil off and added another 2 1/2 gallons of room temperature water to the fermenter after we had cooled the wort. Their...

    Yeast Question

I'm sure it will be fine. We've been there few times before and always in a panic!! One piece of advice...We used a yeast starter for this most recent batch we made and what a difference. It's almost like be careful what you wish you for!! Thank God I came home early that first day and quickly...

    Irish Stout

Hi guys so for better or worse this was their response below ( and FYI they did respond in a very timely manner! ). For the record we kept a close watch on our steeping temperature and we use store bought springwater not tapwater for our beer although maybe we should be testing the pH ? Hummm...

    Irish Stout

Thanks guys! We got the wort to 70 degrees in about 20-25 so I don't think that was the issue. I may send Brewers Best a note on the website to get their take and see what they say, I'll let you know!

    Irish Stout

Hi again Sr Crudo - i’ve been doing a lot of reading up and it does sound like in this type of beer age will be it’s friend, and hopefully that bitterness will mellow out. We don’t know much but we do know beer LOL! and it definitely tastes more bitter Than Guinness which according to Beer...

    Irish Stout

Hi Head First and Jeff! Thanks for Replies!! - we are Guinness fans, Looked up and see that G is a 45 IBU. So we just did a side by side... and accounted for the fact that it's a commercial beer with all the bells and whistles, with nitro etc. and I'm telling you, our beer is actually pretty...
