Water calculations - roasted vs specialty malts

https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/1202094/1887-fullers-porter The recipe is not shared/public but hopefully you can still get to it from this link. Appreciate you looking into this.

Water calculations - roasted vs specialty malts

Feels very odd posting a link for support in a public forum, but here's the calc: https://www.brewersfriend.com/mash-chemistry-and-brewing-water-calculator/?id=P4NMD56 The recipe method is no sparge, hence all the liquor is added at the start of the mash (BIAB style). The acid addition is...

Water calculations - roasted vs specialty malts

Well, yeah. That's why there's a different classification. The point is I don't know if that classification is behaving as expected. I can send a link to the water calc in question, I just don't know who I would send it to. There isn't a clear route to technical support.

Water calculations - roasted vs specialty malts

Yes, I am looking for the developers to confirm what's going on and whether it's expected behaviour. Also, note that changing the malt type to "roasted" is increasing the pH rather than lowering it as you might expect (since, as you say, roasting typically increases acidity).

Water calculations - roasted vs specialty malts

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but here is a picture what I'm seeing. On the left is the pH calc with the malt set as "specialty". On the right, set as "roasted". The change in calculated pH value is far larger than I'd expect.

Water calculations - roasted vs specialty malts

The water calculator seems to dramatically change its assumptions on malt pH effect when selecting different classifications of malt. For example, in a recipe with approx 25% Crisp Brown Malt, the calculator changed from 5.5 pH to 5.0 pH just changing the Brown Malt from "Roasted" to...

    Adding custom fermentables or "Other"

Just to add - I've also noticed that if you don't explicitly click on the use / timing drop down values (e.g. Water Agent, Mash) then these also sometimes throw errors. I presume these are being added as null values in the database if the user leaves them at the pre-selected value in the UI...

    Adding custom fermentables or "Other"

In the past, to add a unique item to a brew - e.g. a flavouring - you could simply type in the "Other ingredients" section. However, when saving recipes, this throws an error saying the name of the "other ingredient" has not been specified. In order to clear the error, you have to wait for the...

Recipe Editor is showing lbs for all entries.

Same is happening here - recipe editor is set to metric but any new fermentable additions default to lbs. This particular release appears very much more buggy than normal.

Awesome New Updates for January 2019!

Appreciate the update. However, custom fermentables are now working less well than before. 1. They no longer sort properly within a recipe by weight. This might be due to the brand, however, I don't really care about brand, so it's unhelpful for my inventory management to have to add this. I...

    Acid additions...

Just to mention I've noticed this too. I always put acidulated malt in the fermentables list so it is counted in the gravity - but this means the new quick pH stat is incorrect. Clicking through into the water calculator I can see that whatever amount of acid malt I entered in the grist is also...

Option to personalize the brew steps

I think I've said it before, but I really only need to edit the brew steps for specific recipes. I know what I'm doing with an everyday beer - it's the weird ones where the steps are completely different to usual where I need a reminder from the log!

    Editable Brew Steps

Hi Yooper, it's good that you can toggle steps on and off, but being able to add your own steps would be really helpful. I'd think an add button with a free text field, then some kind of drag and drop to position the step in the brew session would be great. That might be more flexible for the...

Total Recipe Mash Diastatic Power Calculation

This doesn't appear to work with custom grain additions?
