Just did a brew (Nut Brown Ale) which the recipe calculated a 1.022 OG and I got a 1.048. The originator of the recipe indicated a 1.044 which tracks what I got. Why is the recipe calculator so far off?

what is your recipe editor efficiency set at like ": 72% (ending kettle)"
I have this same recipe at 72% and use 10 pounds of MO and the OG is 1.054

Equipment profile is set at the recommended 70%

I changed mine to your efficiency and changed the grain amount and still get 1.041

Ah, therein lies the culprit. Recipe efficiency set at 35. Moved to 70 and voila! now OG is 1.045. Much obliged for the attention to my question.

when you do extract it defaults steeping grains to 35% , so if you start in extract then change to all grain it stays at 35%

Been working with my other recipes. The efficiency varies widely among my three most recent BIABs. Is this typical?

English Brown Partial Mash 60
Irish Dry Stout BIAB 50
Nut Brown BIAB 75

Hay TWS there seems to be a lot of variables when it comes to mash efficiency. Eg Sparge volume, mash volume, mash temperature, mash length, type of grain ect. At first my efficiency was a bit staggered but it will eventually even out or so that seems to be the case with my BIAB experience. Good luck and happy brewing to ya
