What makes a double a double?
I have been thinking about brewing a double black IPA inspired by the Odell Mountain Standard. I have looked around and found Black IPA recipes but nothing really for a double. Can i simply crank up the gravity with
base malts?
The Mountain Standard is one of those beers that just grows on you. I have never really considered a black IPA as something i would drink very much of, let alone try brewing..... but im now on a mission.
Any recipe ideas?

Dave,

A DIPA is just a high gravity IPA. Not really double though - that would be 12 - 14% ABV. You'd want to up your hops proportionately.

You might want to increase your hops a bit disproportionately. The higher gravity reduces utilization AND the higher malt content decreases the "subjective" bitterness of the beer. A 40-IBU pilsner is quite bitter while a 40 IBU double would be cloyingly sweet.
