necessary to caustic brand new kegs

So I bought brand new kegs. Is it necessary to do a caustic wash? Or can I just start with a StarSan rinse and drive on?

Yep. "Brand-new" means all kind of nasty process-related gunk. Welding byproducts, greases, you name it. Better you get all that stuff out before putting your first batch in, unless your first batch is something you just want to taste like a machine shop floor.... ;-)
