Hello,

I've been brewing extract for around 20 years. I've tried recipes of my own creation, which worked out really nicely. But I've always lacked the confidence to brew something really big.

I was out of brewing for a while but now I'm back in. I'm still strictly an extract brewer. I know the real hardcore folks out there are all grain but extract works for me.

To overcome my fear of high gravity I'm thinking of making a barleywine. I have a recipe here http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/174579/blitzkrieg-barleywine. It's an English style barleywine with some hint of German influence. I think everything will mesh nicely. The calculator says it matches the style but, given the bill for fermentables, I'd like to know what experienced brewer's think before I start writing checks for ingredients.

Many thanks in advance for your insight and experience. I really appreciate the input.

14 ounces is a lot of hops in a 5 gallon batch.
Have you considered an higher AA German hop for your bittering addition?

I have a extract Barleywine recipe I have made a couple times:

I didn't have any problem getting to 10% alcohol, but you have to pitch a lot of yeast: at least 1M cells / mL / deg Plato. For the last batch I did, I made a 4L starter on a stir plate. I don't think the pitch rate you have in the recipe will get you there.

I also agree with TBM, a higher AA bittering hop will be easier (and cheaper). 1 - 2 ounces of Magnum will get you the bitterness you need.

Hello,

Thanks so much for the replies. I will definitely look into my bittering options, Brew Mentor. And I'll have a look at that other recipe, bilhelm96.

Thanks again :)
